Monday Made It: BUSY BUSY BUSY!

Okay, so I have been super busy this week! I think with the understanding that summer is coming to a close... and quickly... that I have really jump started my system.

First thing on the list, my first 9 weeks of school placed into 1 binder! I have already mapped out the first week of school and could not be more excited!

You'll see that I have a tab for each week. Every 9 weeks will have it's own binder. I have put in all of my lesson plans, and am also planning on putting in the copies I will need for the week. I hope this will make it easier for me, and will have everything in one ready to go place.

If there are any teachers how there who want to swap ideas for the first week of school for Writer's Workshop, Daily 5, Math Workshop, and anything else, I'd love to chat! Definitely email me! I know I would love thoughts on my first week! :)

I also created some frames to house my objectives for the week. I still have yet to attach the foam letters to name the subject as I am not sure if that's what I want to do yet. I kept the safari theme going though.

I LOVED this idea from The Teaching Thief.

 Here's mine:
It will go great with my safari theme and be an awesome way for students to sticky note their thinking. Still need to figure out how to do the title. I'm thinking I'll be putting "Thinking Tracks" on it. What do you think?

I have also been really thinking about what do with fluency and sight words, so after seeing a great list of sight word chants at Growing Kinders, I printed them out and taped mine onto popsicle sticks with packing tape.
I plan to decorate some sort of tube and house them inside.

I also created a compliment box, which you can read more about on this post. Basically my students and I write compliments for each other, and during morning meeting or anytime throughout the day, I'll pick out a few and read them to the class. We clap and practice eye contact and saying thank yous and your welcomes. If you're interested, I talk much more about it here!
I still need to take packing tape and cover it in it. That way it's like its laminated and won't get ripped up or dirty. All I used was a Kleenex box and scrapbook paper! :)

And greeting and activity cards to go with morning meeting which you can read more about here. (they are from Mrs. Bainbridge's page)

I also ordered this awesome pocket chart from Amazon.
I numbered each pocket and am planning on having students put any work done, notes, whatever inside their number.

Now when I'm grading, it'll make everything easier to have each student's work all in one place, and easy for me to see what's missing. And how many times have you heard "I can't find my paper! I know I turned it in!" well now time is saved because there is only 1 pocket for them to look through to find their work! Oh and no name papers? Now it won't be such a hassle to find out! I'm really hopeful this works this year. A big thanks to Mrs. Goodwin at i live 2 learn i love 2 grow!

Oh and I just bought these ADORABLE schedule pictures, and am planning on printing them out and laminating them. They came from Ladbug Teacher Files. I'm am in love with them.

Happy to say I crossed a few things off my list... but still so many more to go! Next up, calendar math, poem of the week, and a few other pinterest projects! Come on productive Monday!!! :)

Oh ANNND Colleen at Totally Teriffic in Texas is having a giveaway and Amanda Madden at Teaching Maddeness!

Morning Meetings and Compliment Box

Y'all can I tell you how productive I was yesterday!?!? I worked on lesson planning, morning meeting stuff, and tons of Monday Made It things. Today you ask? Well... not AS productive, but I did take my big man to get his nails clipped. He screamed like a Chihuahua, but is looking good.. and resting. Rough day!

Such a handsome guy! Ok... on to my thoughts on morning meetings.

I did these a little bit this year, but didn't commit or make the most of them. Sometimes they would go on WAY too long, and other times there was no plan to them and thus ineffective as a morning meeting.

Yesterday I spent pretty much the WHOLE day dedicated to researching and putting together some resources I can use during morning meeting. Here's what I am planning on doing.

MORNING MEETING SCHEDULE:
1. Greeting
2. Lightning This That (name still in the works)
3. Announcements/Compliment Box
4. Activity
5. Morning Message

which will all lead into:

Body Break
Poem of the Week (another post coming on this soon, I'm super excited to try this out this year!!)
Body Break
Read Aloud
Writing

GREETING
I'm sure you've seen the awesome Mrs. Bainbridge's morning meeting page right? Well she has some amazing cards there that have directions for all sorts of greetings. 40 I believe.

I cut them out and put them on a ring. She mentioned that she starts the year with learning how to shake hands and give eye contact. I love that. I am really big on my students giving eye contact (and let's be honest, that can be hard for adults to do too!)

LIGHTNING THIS THAT
At a character education training I went to last year, our trainer mentioned that during morning meetings she would ask students a quick question everyday. Something like "Do you prefer rain, sun, neither or both. Going around the circle students would quickly give their answer only. It takes a minute or so and is fun to do! It's interesting to see how students answer.

Now if a student didn't have an answer right away, I would skip over them. I'd always come back to them at the end after they've had some time to think.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMPLIMENT BOX
Here I figure I can go over the schedule, upcoming dates for important events, and any other changes that may be going on for that day. I was also thinking I could do my compliments here!

In my room we do a compliment box. I'm wondering if this might be a good place to put this? I love to pull at least 2 every day.

During the beginning of the year we discuss a lot of character traits, then post them on the word wall in a different color than HFW and vocab words. To alleviate the "you have pretty shoes" or "I like your hair" compliments, I model quality compliments and really praise students who use our character education words. We use sentence stems such as: "Ms. Wilkie showed integrity when she picked up trash on the floor and no one asked." or "Ms. Wilkie showed perseverance in writing when she worked the whole time." Then they put their name on it and drop it in the box. Students can make these during the Daily 5 work on writing, can do it during morning work, at the end of the day, or during any free time.

Basically it's just a Kleenex box

That I put scrapbook paper on! I'm planning on taping it all up with packing tape, so that way it's like it was laminated and all those edges sticking up will stay down. Plus it won't get mucked up with all those many hands on it!

Kids then write compliments on strips of paper, and put their name on the back.

When we pick a compliment out of the box, I read it to the class and we all clap. Then the student who received the compliment looks the person in the eye who gave it to them and tells them thank you (in what ever language we have learned that week). That person then responds with you're welcome.

The person who received the compliment comes up to the front, and using this little mini stapler, I staple it around their wrist.

So it looks like this!

The kids love it! We do it all throughout the day. I especially love giving them out when they're in line- but only when they are quiet and showing the BEST line behavior. What a positive way to start out the day AND the rest of the day! It's especially awesome when students come whisper to me about the compliments they've made others or are going to make.

ACTIVITY

What a great time to bond and have fun! I've read about so many quick games online, and always wondered when there was time to do one. Now I have an allotted time! Again there was a ton at Mrs. Bainbridge's site.

I printed a few that I thought would work for me and put them on red cardstock. These are more silly/fun songs and team building games. Then I found some quick math and reading games/review which I put on blue and yellow cardstock. My plan is to do this:

MondaySilly (red)
TuesdayMath (blue)
WednesdayMad Lib
ThursdayReading/Word Work (yellow)
FridaySilly (red)

MORNING MESSAGE
I feel like I need to do some more research on this. I'm thinking of writing a letter to the class each morning on something special that may be happening, or something that we're learning about. My AP suggested we take a few minutes to work on grammar skills, so I was thinking this might be a great place to address some misspelling of HFW and missing punctuation.

This place has a really great schedule for how they do their message. Click the picture to see it!

And during all of this thinking, making, and walking all over the house, here's my little shadow, Max, who was with me through it all.

He's such a great helper!

Oh and Denise at Yearn for Learning is having a give away for hot dots! Yeah! ANNND Teacher-iffic. And Casey at Second Grade Math Maniac!

What do y'all do for morning meetings? Do you have a favorite part of morning meeting or a favorite activity? Please share! :)Ba sically where we go over the schedule, talk about any due dates or upcoming events. Might be a place to address  behavior problems that have been going on in the class as well.

Things for the First Day

So... summer sure is flying by! I cannot believe it is almost mid July! I've seen quite a few panic posts made lately about how there is still so much left to do! I definitely am feeling the pressure too!

One thing I did at the beginning of the summer was begin to get my first week written out in lesson plans. Somehow I didn't save mine from last year?!?! Of course...

Every year I always start out the first week with a time capsule. It's so much fun to see our students grow, but sometimes I don't know if they can see it! This little freebie below is a great way to get students to recognize that! Here are the first 2 pages of the 7 page freebie:

Since I've taught 2-5th grade, there are a few similiar pages included, which I figured you could pick and choose what you wanted to use. For second grade I use:

About Me
Hand Print Tracing
Foot Print Tracing
Fill in the Blank

The rest I feel are geared more for older students. I've added pictures to the About Me page too since I noticed a lot of students at the beginning of second still needed help reading.

While they are working on their time capsule, I walk around with string and measure how tall they are.

Once they have finished their pages and they have their piece of yarn, I place it all into a zip loc baggie. I hide them away in a cabinet, and students don't get them back until the last day of school. They are so excited to see how their handwriting has changed, and how different their hand/foot prints are. It's also amazing to see how much they have grown when they hold their piece of yarn up!!

A few books I ALWAYS read are:

I'm also thinking of starting an author study right off the first week. I'm thinking Kevin Henkes!

And has anyone seen the updated version of the first 5 days of Daily Five on the sisters site? I tried it out last year and LOVED it.

I've linked up today with Molly at Psyched to be in Second and Teaching Joys today!

Freebie Fridays

What are some tried and true things you love to do the first week of school?

Oh and thank you to all of the sweet comments about Dave (my bofriend's) birthday gift. He definitely loved it and was surprised! But now what to do with all these deflated balloons? Well... here's one thing Dave came up with

Oh Hunter, you are sooooo patient :)

Oh and don't forget to check out Kate's awesome giveaway! :)
